Hey friends! It has been a long time since I have shared a Trashtastic Treasures post, and I am happy to be here today with a new one for you! If you are a regular reader of the blog, you have probably seen this spool table that is out on my back deck before. I've had it for a couple of years now, and it has never been treated before. But I realized this past Summer that it was time to do something to protect this table. I met up with a representative of a Denmark based company called WOCA while I was at the Haven Conference and showed her pictures of my table. She offered to give me the supplies I needed for this project, and I am so grateful for that! So courtesy of WOCA, I am happy to share with you My Spool Table Makeover!
This table was given to me for free by a friend of ours how worked for a local telephone company, and I just love the rustic vibe of the table, but it was time to protect it from the elements. It is way too heavy to move, and so it stays on the deck all year around. I knew I didn't want it to go through another winter without some protection, so I wanted to get this done in the Fall, and my 16year old son actually did the whole thing for us! He checked to make sure I was going to give him the credit he deserved, so I wanted to make sure the world knows he helped us out with this one! Ha! Here is a picture of the table before we treated it. It just kind of blended in with the wood of the rest of the deck.
And here it is after it was treated. It looks and feels so much better! I chose the exterior oil in the color grey, and it is exactly what I wanted it to be! I was sent several different colors to sample before deciding which color I wanted to use, and I settled on the grey. I sampled it on the underneath side of the top of the table. But before I did anything at all, we cleaned the table really well using the WOCA Exterior Cleaner. My husband is the one who cleaned the table with this cleaner, and he raved about how well it worked! This exterior cleaner is good for cleaning of wood decking, garden furniture, siding, fences, doors, carports, etc. The product removes green growth and dirt. And the great part about this cleaner is that it is not harmful to vegetation! My husband loved this product so much that he is planning to use it to clean our entire top and bottom decks. And they are huge! We usually clean them every two years, and right now they are showing green growth, but we need to wait until Spring so that it will be fresh for Summer.
After we cleaned the table, we let it dry for a few days and waited to make sure the weather forecast was good before we applied the exterior oil. The oil was really easy to work with, it was just like painting the table.
This WOCA exterior oil can be used on new and previously oiled wood products. It provides a hard-wearing surface, contains UV protection, prevents mold and fungus, is fast drying, and can be used on all wood types. This product is water-dilutable and friendly to the environment. It is a strong water and dirt repellant.
WOCA Exterior Oil
How to Apply WOCA Exterior Oil:
1. Clean the wood surface with WOCA Exterior cleaner.
2. Let the wood dry for at least 24 hours. Sand down any rough spots with sandpaper.
3. Apply in dry weather only.
4. Stir the oil thoroughly before use.
5. Apply a thin and even coat of oil with a brush. Treat the end grain wood first.
6. Wipe off any excess oil with a clean cloth after no more than 5 minutes. Be careful to remove excess oil from joints and grooves.
7. Repeat steps 5 & 6 until the surface appears saturated with oil.
8. When the wood is dry, it may be polished with a polishing pad or machine to ensure an extra hard wearing surface.
9. It takes 24-48 hours for the oil to harden thoroughly. The wood must not be exposed to water during this period.
10. Repeat the oil treatment when required.
I love the color of this table now, and it feels really rich and smooth. And I really like the way you can still see the natural look of the wood through the oil. We did two coats of the oil on our table. And when it rains, you can see the water just bead up on the surface.
I'm really happy that we finished this before winter sets in. Now I can rest easy that my table will be protected from another harsh winter. And I know that when needed, I can repeat this process to preserve my table for a very long time.
I'm also pretty happy that I was able to get this project finished and photographed right when our tree was at the height of it's beautiful Fall color. Thank you Mother Nature for that! Is there anything more beautiful than Autumn? This was a table that I got for free, and it has been turned into a rustic treasure! We really enjoy using this table for entertaining and family dinners and I feel much better knowing I knocked this one out this Fall! What do you think of our table makeover? I would love to hear about it in the comments!
